For the past week, Phil and I have been praying, thinking, talking, researching, and trying to make an educated decision aobut his next treatment. I am thankful for the IMF‘s hotline, for the Internet, and for Phil’s oncologist, Dr. Brian Smith.
In the end, we decided to go with Dr. Smith’s recommendation and try oral Melphalan, but we don’t yet know whether Prednisone or Decadron will be added. The other option was a second stem cell transplant, but with the prospect of another long recovery and a remission shorter than the last (which was 18 – 20 months), it wasn’t appealing, at least to me. In fact, it downright scared me.
I’m just glad to have the decision behind us. Phil will call the doctor tomorrow.
